Gaines Bend began as a working cattle ranch along the Brazos River in 1859. More than a century later, the creation of Possum Kingdom Lake reshaped the land, and eventually part of that ranch became the community that exists here today.
The ranch is still here. Cattle still graze beyond the houses, much of the peninsula remains open land, and generations of the same family continue to own and operate Gaines Bend.
It isn’t the most developed place on Possum Kingdom Lake. That’s part of what makes it Gaines Bend.
Seven Generations on the brazos
The Belding family established the Gaines Bend ranch along the Brazos River in 1859, more than 80 years before Possum Kingdom Lake existed.
When the river was dammed and the lake filled in 1941, thousands of acres of familiar country changed almost overnight. The family adapted, and the cattle ranch along the Brazos became a cattle ranch with 11 miles of shoreline.

The Gaines Bend Marina gives property owners a convenient place to keep their boats right here on the peninsula, with covered slips and easy access to Possum Kingdom Lake.
With new docks planned for summer 2027, the marina is growing to meet demand while remaining exclusively focused on serving the Gaines Bend community.
